  1. At my tender age of 68 I said to myself - Why not? Always loved the sound of the piano. Would love to learn to play for my own enjoyment and others if they are fortunate enough to be in my company. So....... Let's go! I'm ready!

  2. Two reasons actually: 1. I am 79 and they say to stay sharp in later years to keep the brain busy and one way is to learn new things. and 2. I have always enjoyed music both listening and making. I have played drums, accordian, guitar (lead, rhythm, and bass) but haven't for some time due to life getting in the way. Now that I am retired I would like to add music back into my life along with a plethora of new things.

  3. Played guitar as a hobby for years when I had the time and found myself listening to more piano than guitar music and decided to buy a yamaha DGX-660 which I love the sound of actually bought it5 years ago so I want to learn some songs aswell as more theory

  4. Took traditional piano lessons as a child but always in awe of people who could just sit at piano and paly just about any song. Realized many years later it was by learning chord progressions!

  5. I found you on YouTube & I could tell right away you are a great teacher.
I started learning the piano when I was about 5 w/ the Suzuki method. Although I haven’t keep up with all those years it is something that I revisit when I need to be grounded. Thank you for having this information for free & for being you 😁❤️❤️

  6. I'm very excited to begin this new approach to learning piano. I have taken piano classes, struggled with sheet music, started and stopped in frustration many times. This is totally different. Working my way through the book and I'm amazed how much I've learned already.

  7. I’ve wanted to learn to play piano most of my life. I think it is the best sounding instrument to play solo because it can present a song with a range of high mid or lower octaves at the same as simultaneously playing a bass lines. I’ve always loved the full range sound a piano is capable of.

  8. I noticed that one of your students had the name of Phoenix something so I was wondering if he also lives in Arizona? I am in Peoria and would love to connect with other students if they would have that inclination. Johnny. (~_~)

  9. I am a 78 y/o retired military veteran and well aware that to promote longevity one should keep the mind active and learn new things. What better way to stay mind active than to learn to play the piano along with new songs. (~_~)

  10. I am just a beginner iam now retired and I need something to do so I love music and I have purchased a Roland Go 88 piano keyboard
Hoping that you can learn me how to play I am 72 l hope I have not left it to late to learn I have no music experience at all so it is going to be a big challenge I hope you can help me regards Robert

  11. Hello, iwould like to be able to play more freely by using chords and knowing which chords to use in a song.
I have already bought several online courses and learned stuff, but instill can,t find the chords that fit the meody on my own..

  12. Wow, I love your teaching. I've been playing for two years and consider myself at the intermediate level.
I like your way of setting goals. I enjoy playing in church, at recitals, and at home to entertain myself & family, and I plan on recording some of my playlists to create an album to give to members to donate the sales to the church, & to do the same for the gospel rescue center.
I also plan on being at the advanced level someday!!

    Sincerely,

Norm Harrison, Las Cruces, New Mexico, USA.

  13. Hello, I've played guitar since I was 14 (I'm 61) and used to play in bars in a band. I recently bought a Novation MK3 88 key to mainly use for my DAW, but I also wanted to learn the keys. I'm ironing out Layla Coda's end piece by Derick and the Dominoes, and I have what I think is a jump start, so to speak, as far as understanding music theory. I came across your tutorial for Rocket Man and found your website, so I wanted to take a look.

  14. Ive been putting off playing piano for 10 years. Finally picking it back up again. I'm a working guitarist so I want to be able to play all the songs that I can play on guitar, on piano

  15. Hello. I'm Vince from Paris (France). I found you trying to learn how to play "man in the mirror" -> I saw one of your videos on YT and I enjoy the way you presents things ! Very clearly. Thank you.

  16. I learned for years the traditional way... my poor paren£$ paid out for all those year$ with just a little success. I'm grateful for the ear for music it gave me.. BUT I'd love to play naturally and learn in a much more fun style. This looks great. Thanks.

  17. I'm very interested in this way of learning to play piano. Many years ago, I classically learned piano. My English is not good but I will put all my effort to follow you.
    Thanks

  18. I am an experienced classical pianist, who, until recently, couldn't play anything without sheet music. I am learning to play just using chords now, and am already finding it has freed me up a lot. I thought your information would be helpful with this. My 'why' is to be able to perform for others. Something I can't do at the moment.

  19. I bought a piano 4 years ago and want to learn to play piano as fluently as I speak to express myself. I did not succeed with the conventional methods (music sheets). I want to play Your song (Elton John) and make it sound like the original one and be able to play many other songs and make people sing in family parties.

  20. I have always loved music, and I want to learn the piano but always struggled with the traditional approach. I need a fresh approach, and when I saw some on your videos on Youtube I thought I'd give this a try.

  21. I got tired of playing classical for myself and wanted to play with other non classical musicians.
So now learning chords and whatever without a teacher.

  22. Hi Coen,
This is Yi. Besides I can play with a music sheet, I always like to be able to play simply with chords, modes, and scales. Your videos on the YouTube are right for me.

    Many thanks,

    Yi

  23. I have always played musical instruments by ear, and keyboards for the longest time. I have no formal musical training and I cannot read sheet music. I have searched for years for this type of course. I hope to put it to good use and be able to play the keyboard the way I play guitar, using chords.

  24. I play guitar and bass and I write songs. I think in terms of chord progressions already. I’ve been learning to play keys for the past year and it has been slow going. So this course seems perfect for me. I’m surprised there aren’t more courses like this one.

  25. First, I love music, especially jazz, and especially jazz piano. I find reading music difficult and I can’t play any of the songs I like my reading sheet music. When I watch YouTube tutorials, if the instructor shows what he’s playing on the generated keyboard I can generally follow and play it, but because I’m playing what’s instructed by rote I have to memorize the songs, many with difficult, rapidly changing chords and that’s hard to remember especially if you want to have a repertoire. If this course can teach me how to play music by ear, that’s what I want to get out of it.

  26. I want to be able to just sit at the piano and play something that comes to mind. By that, I do not mean a song I learned by heart, but more like expressing a mood, or a feeling, that pops up in my head.

  27. I took lessons as a child and lessons as an adult. Lessons were always geared toward classical music and I couldn’t play a note without looking at sheet music. Since I haven’t played in years, I’ve even lost thst ability. I hope that this program will help me play music that I enjoy.

  28. For me playing is at first for myself. It helps me going on. Brings me pleasure to play. Best medecine ! I like to play the songs i like And now discovering improvisation... WOW !!!! I feel now free on piano ! Thank you for all your hood work ! 🙂

  29. I love the piano in every form , I am hoping this different approach will help me to achieve my goal of playing at least a couple of songs completely, I need to be told what to practice as I am very easily distracted and tend to jump from one thing to another , I have found the book very interesting so far so am very keen to continue this process , thank you Coen 😊 .

  30. Have messed about with piano off and on re my favourite tunes but have never progressed far because I find the right hand left hand co-ordination difficult. The chord approach is very interesting and like language makes good sense as a way forward. I volunteer in a musical instrument museum where there are many keyboard instruments and when doing tours with visitors it would be great to be able to play a piece or two rather than just strike a chord and that's all.

    • Also I’m a huge Elton John fan and saw him for the sixth time on his farewell tour. Trying to learn Rocket Man from your YouTube video. Just a beginner at 63. I have more time now to learn a new skill.

  31. The simple use of the root note in the left hand is an interesting short cut to playing a tune which is usually based on the right hand melody. Really interesting! This fits in well with my attempt to play piano with both hands as an alternative to playing 'keyboard' with the chords in the left hand 'accompaniment' section whilst concentrating to play the melody in time in the right hand.

  32. I am a Billy Joel Tribute and have been performing as The Piano Man for 15 years.
Unfortunately, in all my years I have never played the piano for any audience. Although I can walk through sheet music from years of effort trying to learn, I'm nowhere near proficient enough to play with the band. So for all these years, I have had to make shift playing in front of muted keyboards or fake playing without touching the piano while moving like I am playing. My "WHY" is to get to the level where I can actually play on stage with the band. I did not go to school for music like the band members so I feel that I've been at a disadvantage since the start. It would feel so good to participate in singing and playing these tunes I love so much on the piano while I sing.

  33. Hi. This is Daryl. I am a 68 year old "youngster" who loves New Age, and Jazzy piano tunes. I bought music keyboards but could never make them sound like the players on the radio. Took my first piano lesson when I was 38 years old. It was with a classical piano teacher. After 2 years I could only play one classical tune and NONE of the songs I loved to hear on the radio. I left that teacher and bought tons of sheet music of every tune I enjoyed. Even the "Easy Play Versions" didn't sound like the songs I loved. I bought tons of online lesson books, Fake Books, and after a while I realized I couldn't read or understand (play) them either. I researched and found that chords might be the answer to my prayers, but just trying to memorize them was too difficult. I mean really, how do you memorize a AbMaj7b9 chord if you cant find a flat 9? Then I found Coen and his method, and after that 5 Day Pop Piano Challenge, I realized this is what I was looking for. I'm a big fan of Jim Brickman, and David Benoit & others. My ultimate goal is to finally play the songs I love and understand what I am doing on the keyboard and stop running out to buy sheet music of tunes that I cannot read or play. Thanks!

  34. I can play a little never had a teacher but really wanna play. I don't want to learn sheet music. I make hip hop and R&B. But feel I've gotten stuck where I am and ready to move on.

  35. I have always loved music. I took piano lessons as a child but reading music was just so difficult especially as a 13 year old kid. Although I did learn the basics, my heart just wasn't in it. Now that I am much older and (hopefully wiser) : ) I am more inspired and motivated to learn how to play the piano by this method. I am truly enjoying this lesson and look forward to even more. Thank you Coen, you are such an inspiration.

  36. I'm 73 years old. I've study classical music (piano-guitar) on and off for many years. Oddly enough I can't play a thing by heart even after all these years. But I still have this inner urge to play music and spécifically on the piano. It has become an obsession. I want to do it by myself now. But what comes with it is confusion as to what to play and how to play it.

    Luc

  37. Never attempted to play piano until recently but I can sing and would like to accompany myself on the piano. Just learnt to play and sing along to "Imagine" chords so encouraged but it's a very slow process!

  38. As a mature woman learning the Piano I am struggling with reading 2 lines of music and playing with both hands and all at the same time... I am hoping this course helps me to learn chords and shapes and play music easier than I am currently doing, thank you!

  39. Hi Coan, I am 77 year's young and an intermediate tenor saxophone player. I currently play in a community band and I have a strong desire to be able to improvise, which I'm currently working on. It has been said to me that I should take a basic piano course to help me understand chord progressions etc. In your opinion, would your course help me in my quest? Kind regards .... Wayne

  40. Played drums for many years in a variety of bands. Thought I should try and learn the piano so I could entertain myself and learn more about music in general. I have been learning via 'Simply Piano' which has taught me to read from sheet music to an intermediate level but I really want to be able to play by ear and without music. Your course sounds ideal and I have enjoyed the initial launchpad finding it motivating and enlightening.

  41. I have been trying to learn to play piano and I am not making much progress. After spending time learning song I find that unless I forget it if I don’t play it for a few weeks. So want to play for my own enjoyment without stress of reading sheet music.

  42. I've been playing guitar for a few years, mainly strumming chords and trying to replicate the parts in 'pop' songs, and this sounded like the perfect way to move on to piano

  43. My daughter just bought a piano and gave me her old keyboard. I am 75 and retired and would like to be able to play songs for my own enjoyment without having to spend yers learning to read sheet music. Hoping this may help me.

  44. Want to learn the piano. Struggled with the guitar for 30+ years. Apparently I can play piano by ear. Cannot read music either. Surprisingly it does not make sense to me engineering mind. Anyway, you quickly taught me how to play Lady Madonna on Piano. So, I need the fundamentals to crawl, walk, run...
Right now i'm at barely picking my head up. Your course may do the trick. We'll see.

  45. I've played guitar, mostly by ear, for almost 50 years. I started learning piano the traditional way about 3 years ago. Now i want to play piano by ear too. I'm pretty psyched about your approach. I want to play rock and jazz and play in a band where people are dancing to our music.

  46. I love playing the piano. I see it as a gift that I give to myself. I have been playing since I was 8 and I am now in my 60. I was trained the classical way so I am very connected to having sheet music and lead sheets in front of me. This means I can't do much if there is a piano in front of me because I don't have the music. I have now learned my chords and I am becoming freer in my playing but now I want to play more rhythmically, using patterns, and playing more from intuition.
So I am really looking forward to learning from this course. Cant wait to get started.

  47. I am and have been a Prince fan for many years. And love the skill and versatility he demonstrated on the Guitar and Piano. The song "How come you don't call me anymore" is one of the best pieces of Piano Music I have ever heard.
I play guitar, but the piano music in that song... Rocked my world, and I want to learn how to play it on the piano. I pretty much got the guitar version worked out.
After years of learning to play guitar right and left-handed... I injured my right wrist which forced me to refrain from guitar practice until the injury fully heals. I decided to purchase a 61- key electronic keyboard and was shocked when I realized how visually logical, the piano is compared to the guitar.
Furthermore, I quickly began to realize that learning to do guitar chords with both hands, has given me the dexterity to play the keyboard. So, I'm hoping your "Hack the Piano" program with allow me to realize my lifelong dream... which is to be able to finally play the beautiful melodies/music I hear in my mind and soul.

  48. I want to be able to play to relax, improvise, write own music. I like the piano because it is simple to get started and understand e.g. where the notes are and learn the scales, however it is still very challenging to master and play fully especially with both hands.

  49. I'm an artist both visual and performance that is how I've made my living. I agree with you about the langue of music, I see art the same way. I've played around with guitar for more than fifty years. Notice I didn't say played. I always felt that I could express myself with music more than with words but struggled with the guitar. Learning to play pano had been a lifetime desire. Finally at 70 I felt that I could devote the time to do that. So about eighteen months ago I began learning the langue of the piano. After watching several tutorials I settled on yours. I've learned your intro to New York State of mind and started She's always a woman to me. What came as the biggest surprise to me was how much it improved my guitar playing. I can now hear the words within the cord sentence. I've never mastered reading sheet music I just played by ear. Seeing the importance of proper finger and hand positions to be able to play a song easily was an eye opener. Thanks

  50. Like some others I have moved from being intermediate guitar player to learning piano. I love the sound, how it add to music and I want to be able to better write my own songs. I also want to improvise and play modern pop songs.

  51. I started learning guitar in 2016 with some success and decided to learn piano in January 2021 with the objective of improving my overall understanding of how music works.

  52. I have taken a few piano courses over the years, and have used Flowkey, which is a great software for learning songs, one measure at a time.....

I feel I am still a novice, if not an intermediate pianist.

I can find any triad on the piano with relative ease, including most upper extensions; 7ths, and 9ths-11ths-13ths (same as scale degrees 2, 4, and 6).

I have all of this technical knowledge but I have trouble playing chords beyond the basic format.

Playing arpeggios, or playing chords in a melodic manner as you demonstrated in the video is alien to me....

I look forward to learning from you.

  53. I want to eventually compose songs, and I would like to expand my skill set so that I can more accurately express what I hear in my head through music.

  54. I love playing the piano. Its is like a trip for my soul, sometimes I play for hours without realizing time goes by. I startet about a year ago, watching tutorials on utube. And it feels great to make progress.
I am practicing songs like "I see fire". Right now I am watching you tutorial "Your song". But this will definetly take some time 😉
I´d love to join your course and I am looking forward spending a great time with you!
    I am 53 years old.

    Greetings from Germany 🙂
    Steffi

  55. I want to improve my piano skill. Learn how to improvise, add fillers and runs, and not play boring chords. I like your teaching style, clear explanation, and good videos to follow.
I am excited to try your style of learning.

  56. I am a level 2 piano player, but more classically trained. I do feel music is like learning to learn a new language and able to communicate. I would like to understand chords more and able to learn to play by ear.

  57. I can read sheet music and I can pick up certain notes and play songs by ear, but I would love to learn the process of learning a song from start to finish completely by ear

  58. I started using the piano as a tool to learn music theory an to help me progressing with my bass guitar playing. Its musicality really got me and I now invest more time at the piano than at my bass guitar. Learning songs is easier when seen as chord progressions and melodies (and bass lines) are “technically” justifiable. The only bad thing to learning piano is that you might leave your original instrument aside…

  59. I have always wanted to play piano and previously tried the sheet music method but became frustrated with my lack progress. This method looks far more intuitive.

  60. I watched one if your videos and found your methodology intriguing. I have neuro - challenges and want to play the piano to keep my brain working. I am also singing with a few groups and want to participate on an instrument as well. Everyone plays the guitar, so I thought, why not the piano?

  61. It has been 45 years since I played and I have been looking for an enjoyable way to get back into it. After watching your YouTube videos, I knew right away that this was the course for me.

  62. I’ve always wanted to play piano. I used to listen to the pianist in church, completely mesmerized by the beauty of the sound and her talent. My husband and I have taken music lessons together for 3 years and have spent many evenings until wee hours in the morning jamming together, him on guitar and me on piano. We both know and play our chords well. We have fun and sound great together! However, as we all know the chord approach is great solo on the guitar, but not so much so on the piano. I took the plunge with this course hoping that your layer method will help me to advance in playing the melody rather than just simply playing chords.

  63. Hi! I am a piano player, age 71, not professional. Since I was a child I have played piano by sheets now and then, and Im god at reading those. Nowadays I play most often jazz for my self and in two jazz bands, and there most older, New Orleans jazz, including improvisation. But now I want to play more ”modern” jazz piano, esp swing and other stuff from thirties to fifties, and without reading sheets. I want to pick up some of rhytmic, harmonic and melodic patterns, by listening to recordings of piano artists, e g Duke Ellington, Teddy Wilson, Count Basie, Bill Evans and other. But also some pop, rock and soul piano playing. But how difficult to hear in detail how the piano stars really make it!

  64. I'm a guitar player who is trying to learn piano. This approach is how I learn and write on the guitar, so it is very appealing to me. I'm sure I will continue to learn notation, but this is more motivating.

  65. Hello Coen,
I’ve wanted to become fluent, cohesive and expressive on piano forever. 30 years of starts and stops and that dream still calls me.
I’ve been chording on my own for about 3 months now and I’ve progressed more in those months than I have in the total of trying other so called conventional methods. So when I came across your YouTube channel, your posts really made a lot of sense. I’m ready to finally reach my potential. Thank you for making yourself available.

  66. I play guitar since a long time by ears, like you play piano, and it's easy for me. I begin piano with a teacher who use sheets , and it's not so easy and have no liberty. So I hope your teaching is what I search...

  67. Hi Coen !! I'm exactly wanting to learn a new language as I had a classical training when I was a kid and now, 30 years later, restarting playing, I want to learn to build chords to be able to play quickly what I can hear and go to Jazz impros 😉 thanks for your help !!!

  68. Great startup video! I want to be able to apply different chord patterns and rythms to any song with the ability to play by ear. It is like having a toolbox filled with various tools that I want to apply on the fly. Looking forward to your method of coaching.

  69. I wish to learn to play the piano fluently and fluidly so I can jam with my brother and cousin, who play the bass and electric guitar, respectively. I also wish to compose and perform songs for my loved ones. And I'd like to bolster my music production skills.

  70. I am 72yrs old and messed around with the keys since I was 15. I think it’s time I learned the language of music. I want to be able to understand the songs I hear and translate/transfer that to the keyboard.

  71. Bought a piano, basically to be able to play the intro of "These are the days" of Jamie Cullum. Coen had a brilliant video on that, and now I want to learn more 🙂

  72. I've learned to play guitar through chords. Since I am bad at reading notes, this course seems ideal for learning to play the piano. As a kid I was blown away by the music of Queen and Freddie Mercury's talent.
Now i am 39 and I hope to enjoy and have fun learning to play the piano.

  73. I want to learn to play the piano because I can relax and escape the stress of everyday life when I play music. I love to sing very much and I hope to combine it with the piano soon.

  74. מוזיקה היא על חזון חיים חדש, חשיבה חדשה בראש וכל כך כיף שלה לא יכול לחכות כדי להתחיל ללמוד.

  75. The benefits of playing the piano are vast: increased literacy, intellectual and creative growth, improved social skills and confidence—the list goes on and on! Here are just a few of the top reasons to study piano: Piano-playing improves cognitive development.

  76. I am classically trained and have played the piano for decades. I'm a decent pianist up to fairly advanced classical repertoire. But now in my middle 50s I still cannot sit down and play a pop/standard song without music in front of me. That pisses me off, so I want to learn to play by ear.

  77. I want to really understand the piano ,so that I can play songs that make people feel happy.I'm finding that you have a very special way of teaching people how to play the piano. It's fun and interesting and makes so much sense.Thank you Coen.

  78. Hi, my name is Guy. I would like to prove that at my age (52) it is still possible to learn to play the piano. Not sure I am gonna succeed. But I hope that your method can help me realize my dream.

  79. Love the piano. I want to be able to play without music in front of me. Learnt the piano accordion via the traditional(classic) way.Very impressed with your philosophy ,in the way the piano should be taught.I think I have found what I have been looking for, in a tutor.

  80. I want to be able to play my own melodies and write music for my lyrics. I see music as a language and every word I write has a corresponding musical phonetic but I need to learn that language.

  81. I had 5 years of keyboard lessons and played very well, but stopped at the age of 16. Now I'm 44 years and decided to start over, but now with piano lessons in stead of piano lessons. Because I want to express myself more by music and play when I'm happy of sad. At the moment I'm having some issues and I hope by starting taking piano lessons and play, I will find joy and pleasure again.

  82. I like playing all kinds of songs from all kinds of genres. I know chords well and can pick up pop songs quickly, but I want to improve voicing, rhythms, and embellishments.

  83. I already know chords quite well and can pick up and play pop songs easily, but I want to get better with rhythm, voicing, color, embellishments and fluency. I also want to be able to better incorporate the melody into a song if I feel like it, and to figure out songs better by ear.

  84. i already have some skills und experiences in chord playing. at this time a have two little band projects and there i play e-piano with the Wurlitzer (sound) and Fender Rhodes, also as I would like to conquer the organ - i have a little keyboard+Hammond-expander+leslie ventilator. in this course i would like to learn to play more interesting and more effectfully.

  85. Just love to play for my own listening. Maybe a little better than intermediate but my theory better than practical as i need a load more practise than i have time for. Thanks for all the YouTube videos

  86. Hi!
I’d love to be able to play piano at church and for my family and things- more for the pleasure than anything! I started playing piano at 5 and stopped at about 14-I’m 16 now just for reference. I played classical piano and I hated it so much, all the notes and exams and I just never found it satisfying. I’d been trying to ‘play like a guitarist’ by using guitar chords but found that it was too basic and I wasn’t getting the funk I wanted. (Playing classical leaves you wanted to sound complicated without having all the stress lol). Then I stumbled upon your website! I’ve really been enjoying learning how to play again, but from a different perspective.
    Hopefully this wasn’t too long!
    Foluwa

  87. My why is to be able to play the songs and love and get lost in the music - to also understand the mechanics behind it and to focus on improving so I can play for myself and also accompany my son when he plays the saxophone. Thanks.

  88. I want to write music and perform, all of my music training has been melody based and I am excited to learn more about chords and rhythm to help support my music writing

  89. I love the piano (its sound, armony) and it is my favourite instrument. In addition, I love Elton John's songs and I want to play the piano like him; thanks!!

  90. Beautiful demo. Thanks Coen. I have been playing (without any formal lessons) for a few years - on and off due to work and family. While in total lockdown I’m hoping to learn chord piano systematically so I can be more fluent and confident in speaking this lingo.

I’m not an elementary learner but since I don’t have any courage to venture outside C scale I’d be happy to start from there. Unless you suggest otherwise.

Thanks again for sharing your great knowledge and creative teaching methods with us.

    Blessings.
    Chun

  91. Hey I‘am Frank. I worked as a physician for many years. 3 years ago i got The diagnosis Parkinson Desaease. I decided to realy a Long Dream: to Play Piano. Absolutly Beginner - Zero Knowledge of Musictheory. Not Even Knowing about Name of notes of Even Chords I start. To Play autoditactive two years ago. There are Tons of Piano. Course in the net. Your philosophy and your Kind of teaching the stuff is the Cream of the Top! Unfortunatelly i Endeavour your cours at least Last Week. Thank you for this fantastic didactical approach. greetings from Switzerland! Frank

    • Hi this is Grace, I'm 61 and a late beginner for a piano lesson really but to fulfill a long term dream is to start now than never at all.
